What is IEC CIM?
IEC CIM, the Common Information Model, is a family of international standards (mainly IEC 61970, 61968 and 62325) that defines a shared vocabulary for utility data. Assets, networks, customers, meter readings and work orders all get the same names and relationships everywhere. That means systems such as HES, MDMS, GIS, ADMS and billing can exchange information without custom point-to-point mappings.
What CIM covers
IEC 61970 models the transmission network, IEC 61968 extends it to distribution and enterprise integration, including metering in Part 9, and IEC 62325 covers energy markets.
CIM and smart metering
IEC 61968-9 defines standard messages for meter readings, control commands, events and end-device configuration. Using CIM, an operations platform can talk to any compliant MDMS or HES in a predictable way.
Why it matters for interoperability
Without a common model, every new system adds a new integration. With CIM, utilities integrate once against the model, which lowers cost and vendor lock-in.
