What is DLMS/COSEM?
DLMS/COSEM is the international standard (IEC 62056) for exchanging data with smart meters. COSEM defines a common object model for meter data, such as registers, profiles and events, each identified by an OBIS code. DLMS defines the application protocol used to read and write those objects over any communications medium. Together they let utilities read meters from different manufacturers in a consistent way.
How DLMS/COSEM works
Every value a meter holds, for example active energy import or a tamper event, is a COSEM object with a standard OBIS identifier. A head-end system opens an association with the meter, authenticates, and then reads or writes objects using DLMS services.
Because the model is independent of the transport, the same objects can travel over PLC, RF mesh, cellular or optical ports.
Security in DLMS/COSEM
DLMS/COSEM defines security suites with authentication levels and encryption keys per association. Managing those keys and security events across a large estate is a core smart meter operations task.
Why it matters for operations
DLMS/COSEM makes meters interoperable at the data level, but each vendor still adds its own extensions and head-end system. An operations platform that understands DLMS/COSEM can normalise events and readings from every vendor into one view.
